Cape York/Iron Range Birding Tour

Iron Range is one of the most famous birding sites in Australia. During the 7-day birding tour, we hope to  see all the New Guinea/Cape York specials including the Golden-shouldered Parrot and the stately Palm Cockatoo. From Cairns, we travel to Mt Carbine and on to Laura and Musgrave where there is a full day of birding in Lakefield National Park, before we travel north to Archer River and Iron Range. All meals and flights are included on this birding tour.

The 4 day fly in /fly out tour does not include the Musgrave/Lakefield section and is ideal for people with only a short amount of time available or during the wet season when the Cape Developmental Road is closed to through traffic.

Georgetown

Georgetown, being over the Dividing Range, is a true  Outback and has a very different avifauna to the at found in the Wet Tropics area of the Tablelands Just 4 hours drive to the east. The dams around the town act as a magnet to a variety of birds during during the drier months when there is little standing water to be found elsewhere and a wealth of dry country birds can be seen here including a variety of finches and honeyeaters,  cockatiels, budgerigars, and galahs. A number of interesting additions can be made to this tour including a visit to the Undarra lava tubes or perhaps Innot Hot Springs.

Lakefield National Park

The area around Musgrave and Lakefield National Park has an avifauna closer to the Northern Territory than that of the rainforests to the north and south. This is the best area to see the rare and endangered Golden-shouldered and a full supporting cast including Red Goshawk, Star Finch, Grass Owl and Tawny Frogmouth make this a great destination for a short break or an add on to a Wet Tropics visit.
