The South West of Western Australia is a fantastically diverse region known for its concentration of endemic birds and plants. On this 9 day birding tour we visit the key sites in search of all the endemic species and western specials. There is plenty of beautiful scenery and the tour is timed to enable you to enjoy the spectacular spring wildflowers.

On this tour we hope to see all the south west endemics including Carnaby's Black-Cockatoo, Baudin's Black-Cockatoo, Western Corella, Western Rosella, Red-capped Parrot, Noisy Scrub-bird, Red-winged Fairy-wren, Western Bristlebird, Western Thornbill, Western Spinebill, Western Wattlebird, White-breasted Robin, and Red-eared Firetail.

We will also have a chance to see other western specials such as Rufous Treecreeper, Blue-breasted Fairy-wren, Western Yellow Robin, and Western Whipbird. In addition there are many other interesting species possible.

Itinerary

Day 1

Starting in Perth we bird all the best local parks and lakes, covering a variety of habitats in search of our first South West endemics. Later we make our way to Bungendore Park for a chance at Red-capped Parrot and others. Overnight Armadale.

Day 2

Early morning birding at Wungong Gorge for many of the western specials before driving south to Narrogin and then Dryandra Woodland in the afternoon. The woodland holds many great birds and there is also the chance to see a Numbat. Overnight Narrogin.

Day 3

Again we visit the Dryandra Woodland in search of Blue-breasted Fairy-wren and Crested Shrike-tit. In the afternoon we reach the excellent Stirling Range Retreat where the birding is great. Overnight Stirling Range Retreat.

Day 4

This morning we search for the Western Whipbird one of the three notorious super skulkers of the south west. As we travel south we visit the lovely Porongurup NP and then Albany. Overnight Coraki Holiday Cottages.

Day 5

There will be a dawn stakeout of the Western Bristlebird at the traditional site at Two Peoples Bay, followed by general birding in this rich area. Later we visit Waychinicup and then Cheynes Beach to try for Noisy Scrub-bird. Stay two nights at Cheynes Beach.

Day 6

Full day birding the Cheynes Beach area for Noisy Scrub-bird, Western Whipbird, Carnaby's Black Cockatoo and many others. There may be the chance to do some night spotting this evening.

Day 7

Morning birding at Cheynes Beach before travelling west through some very tall eucalypt forest. In the afternoon we search for Western Corella near Manjimup where we stay the night.

Day 8

Enjoy the spectacular Karri forests while searching for Baudin's Black Cockatoo and then there will be a chance to visit some of the quality wineries of the Margaret River region. Overnight Margaret River.

Day 9

We bird some rugged coastal sites in the morning around Cape Naturalist and then make our way north to some wetlands. Tour ends back in Perth in the late afternoon.

Accommodation is in comfortable hotel/ motel on a twin share basis. All meals are provided. Travel is in an air-conditioned vehicle fitted with satellite phone.
